| Burger King plans to have 1000 restaurants in China before 2015, at least that is what they forecasted in 2005. With three locations already and a fourth one opening soon in the Ritan / Yabaolu area, they appear to have their work cut out for them. |

MODO / MOSTO Press Release:
MOSTO OWNERS CHEF DANIEL URDANETA AND ALEX MOLINA WILL BE OPENING THEIR NEW RESTAURANT –MODO– IN THE BEGINNING OF AUGUST ON THE 3RD FLOOR OF SANLITUN VILLAGE
Following the success of their restaurant Mosto in Beijing, owners Chef Daniel Urdaneta and Restaurant Manager Alex Molina are opening a new venture in the beginning of August at popular 3rd floor of Sanlitun Village.
Building on their philosophy of serving simple food derived from the finest ingredients, the passionate and creative South American duo are excited to introduce a brand new intimate culinary experience to Beijing – Modo.
“At modo we will cook a variety of wholesome gourmet plates with attention to quality and detail, in an intimate and casual setting.” Says chef Daniel Urdaneta.
The menu will change with the seasons, offering a variety of food presented as bites, small plates, big plates and dulces. “Our menu encourages sharing plates, which creates an intimate but easy-going atmosphere.” Daniel says.
Wine will form a centerpiece of the Modo menu. Customers will be able to sample 18 different labels by the glass using our unique wine dispensing technology, or select from our wine list that includes over 80 great labels from around the world.
Restaurant Manager and Owner Alex Molina goes on to say “Our idea is for mosto to continue pleasing customers looking for an alternative fine dining experience, while modo becomes a more casual and easy-going destination without sacrificing taste, presentation, or service.”
In the line of fire, Chef Daniel Urdaneta will continue innovating and drive food creations at both restaurants. In addition, Modo will be introducing a new Chef to the Beijing dining scene; Chef Juan Mateus, who in addition to delivering the highest in quality and presentation, will be adding his personal culinary experience to the table direct from his home country Colombia and years of work experience in Argentina.
The restaurant will exhibit distinctive design elements and accessories typical of retro Beijing. It also has an interactive open kitchen, communal tables, and a wine bar mezzanine. It can seat 28 customers on the main floor, 18 on the mezzanine and 20 on the outdoor deck.
Modo will be opening in the beginning of August and is located at Sanlitun Village’s South side, 3rd floor. (Between Karaiya Spice House and Tony Studio, close to Element Fresh).
We will be open seven days a week and the kitchen’s operating hours are from 11:30 am to 10:00 pm.
For more information please check our Questions & Answers below or email us at info@mostobj.com

TERRA – Cevicheria and Bar TERRA, from the Latin word meaning Earth and Land, continues restaurateur Gaby Alves’ pursuit of presenting innovative contemporary cuisine in a modern and cutting-edge setting.
Located in the heart of Beijing, TERRA is both a Cevicheria and Bar, as well as an all-day restaurant with great lunches, satiating snacks and long-evening options available to satisfy the need for a tempting taste, relaxing afternoon, celebratory dinner or late-night aperitif.
TERRA’s open Cevicheria presents a delectable array of the ages-old South American culinary style that involves lightening-fast preparation of fresh seafood, ingredients of the earth and sea splashes of citrus, the combination of which demands an exacting balance of acidity, full-flavours and super-fresh ingredients.
Serving boutique beers, original and very healthy cocktails alongside an exciting selection of New and Classic wines, TERRA’s upstairs bar to complement the restaurant and downstairs drinks to pair perfectly with the open Cevicheria presents several options for a range of occasions.
TERRA’s contemporary decor and all-day a la carte menu carefully balance the crispy fresh full flavours, energy and vitality of the Cevicheria and Bar to create a relaxed, modern and exciting new concept, with Gaby’s signature service and commitment to excellence in all areas.
Food is by Ana Esteves and Andrew Vile, the latest addition to SALT's team:
Australian Chef Andrew Vile brings 26 years of experience to TERRA's kitchen. Previously working with organic cuisine, Australian contemporary, French Cajun and Mediterranean, among many, Vile will be both on the floor and in the kitchen at TERRA - a new face from which to expect great things from in Beijing's restaurant scene.
TERRA is scheduled to open in Sanlitun soon!

Salt just announced that the location of the old "Rickshaw" bar is soon to be the home of the Sanlitun SALT.
"The concept is fresh and contemporary, along similar lines to SALT in terms of market positioning and direction, but different in what will be served and how..." "...there will be: fresh original cocktails, artisan beers, paired drink options, chilled out sounds and lunch..."

Even though the North side of the Sanlitun Village continues to stand empty after more than 6 months of delays caused primarily by the lack of vendors, things seem poised for change (although you wouldn’t know it by visiting). A closer look at one of the directories shows the list of expected(?) / desired(?) vendors that should be moving in soon. We have included the list for historical record. This list has many of vendors listed multiple times. The list is 57 vendors in length but only 42 are unique. From those 42, there are only three restaurants. No cafes. No bars. This is pure retail highlighting international and emerging local brands.

| Word Up- there is a hot new bar concept about to open near tongli- its apparently going to be called Smuggle9pinkpuregirlstokai club. There will be plenty of black vinyl seating, photocopies of paintings for wall art, lots of strangely cheap drinks and an plenty of friendly chaps from the nigerian embassy hanging around. Its sure to be a hit with the student crowd and boy howdy this is just the kind of new addition sanlitun needs to expand its offering. |

Nali Patio is becoming more of a culinary destination. The second floor is location to the newest additions: Bali Papaya and La Sushi. Bali Papaya is the areas first Indo-Thai restaurant scheduled to open 11/10. La Sushi is a Euro fusion Sushi restaurant scheduled to open around the 11/15. Both restaurants are side by side.
Kevin, one of the two owners of La Sushi said that the restaurant is loosely affiliated with Let’s seafood. According to Kevin, the restaurant will focus on excellent ingredients and quality fish to differentiate itself. The restaurant itself only fits 30 and is generally minimalist in décor. Price point per person, according to Kevin, is 300 RMB.
Bali Papaya has a larger space next door with a average looking Indonesian interior.
Both are upping the culinary repertoire in the sanlitun area.

Joy Luck Restaurant opens on November 3rd. According to their PR announcement, they are a "Supermarket Concept" restaurant. As reported below, the restaurant is located in 3.3 exactly where the back half of China doll was. All tallied, Joy Luck weighs in at a hefty 1,700 Sq meters - said to be bigger than any other restaurant in Sanlitun.
During the first month (November), while they get the kinks out, all food is 50% off. We really appreciate this approach to opening as opposed the other restaurants that have put us thru their "on the job training" at full price.
Luga must have caught wind of this promo because now all food at Luga BAAN Thai is 50% for the month of November as well.
Joyluck is the first international market-sytle restaurant in Sanlitun - perhaps Beijing. Joy Luck serves international food with an array of home-cooked Chinese cuisine, dim sum, BBQ, Pasta, Pizza, Sushi, sashimi and desserts. Joy Luck is also selling wines "at the supermarket prices."

China Doll dropped a few pounds to fit in its current space and to make way for the Joy Luck Restaurant, due to open in early November. Joy Luck will occupy a massive 1700 m2 in what was the dance floor area of the China Doll 3.3. The mixed concept restaurant / bar / wine sales venue will be the first of its kind in Sanlitun and include several different cuisines, and open (no glass walls) kitchens setup as islands where chefs cook your selections.

More Pizza pressure for the The Tree and Peppes Pizza (photos below). Italian Chef Guiseppe De Stefano is building his pizzeria on the northwest corner of 3.3 (Behind 3.3) about half way between Muse and the Opposite House. As earlier reported by Phoenix t., D Lounge opened up across from Rock & Roll about 100 meters behind the Bookworm next to Izak-ya (apparently involved in the project). Double Coffee has been trying for some time to move away from coffee by blanketing the area around their café with “Double deep martini garden” adverts. Nali Mall's Let's Burger is opening up Let’s Seafood across from the Saddle Cantina. In the same area only 3 floors up, Niajo, an Alex Sanchez project, is open for business. The sign says, “Cocina Tradicional Espanola” / Traditional Spanish Kitchen. Behind Nali Mall Salud continues to rake ‘em in by offering “a huge jug of Mojito / sangria” for 120 rmb. See photos for the rest.

The Olive is under new management. The French born executive Chef, Christelle Helf, has already brought some mouth watering changes to the restaurant in the form of a new menu and as the sole provider of cleckes draft beer from Germany(?) (see photos below). Chirstelle's got experience working on 5 star cruise lines that hail from all over the world. On a cruise ship 600-750 people are served each meal so a busy night of 100 should be nothing for Christelle!

Quick update after quite an exodus:
Openings around the large building called "The Orange" otherwise known as the building with the large video marquee
Mango Box, not to be confused with Mango clothing, is a cafe serving all things to do with Mango to include milk, milk drinks, smoothies, and tea. Located on the north side of The Orange.
Macau Taste, not to be confused with the Macau Restaurant on guanghua lu that always has a line out front, is a new restaurant serving Macanese / Cantonese cuisine at very affordable prices.
Pure Smoothies, a smoothie chain, has opened directly to the right of The Orange. Coffee is priced under that of Starbucks and Double Coffee however smoothies prices match that of Eden Juice Bar just south of Crepanini.

Crepanini was closed again today. The way they open and close appears to be influenced by someone or something other than their appetite to make money. The crepe and panini window doesn’t have store hours posted yet.
Subway sub shop in front of 3.3 has ushered in the summer by bringing out their umbrellas and wooden furniture. Now if you’re eating Subway, at least you can enjoy the weather…
Noise was incorrectly said to have been replaced with Willow Willow. Upon closer inspection the new sign states “Willow Willow @ Noise.”
Luga's Pho Pho balcony is now fully enclosed. Let’s hope they have AC.
The owners of “A Lil High” bar have a Japanese Teriyaki restaurant on the second floor displaying the same “局” logo.
The Yipin Xiaolong / Shanghai Dumpling & Noodle restaurant across from Panino Teca now has outdoor seating.
The back of 3.3 is now completely under construction. Access is only available through the front.
The side walkway to the Nali Patio is also cluttered with construction workers renovating the standalone building that was originally going to house Muse.
Muse, as reported earlier, has since moved to Tongli opposite of 9.9 bar and is now open for business.
Cosmo's opening appears to be delayed again. In fact, if appearance is any indication the renovation has actually moved in reverse. When last we checked the outdoor patio was 1/3 constructed. Today it was replaced with old banged up promotion banners. Put that order for two hotdogs and a beer for 25 rmb on hold…

On July 7th Tapas Spanish Restaurant is moving to the first floor of Nali Patio.
The new Muse appears like it might be ready to open on Saturday but only just.
The Hot Dog King is actually named Cosmos. Construction shows signs of progress. Checking in today they had 1/4 of the deck built and the rest lay in pieces. It still looks like Cosmos wont be ready until Saturday night, at the earliest.
The space next to the Pure Girl bar is being ripped out to make space for another bar.
With the addition of the new Pakistani Restaurant mentioned above - called "Pakistan Yadgar Restaurant" - the Sanlitun area now boasts no fewer than five Pakistani & Indian Restaurants (Ganges, Indian Kitchen, The Tandoor Indian Restaurant, Mughals Restaurant, and Hazara Indian Restaurant).
China Doll lost its back entrance to “Game Park,” a sub-basement gaming business. They also have signage and a front entrance as well.
On the second floor just across from Juliette's, pricy T-shirt store “Noise” has been replaced by “Willow Willow,” an equally high-fashion and pricey clothing store.
Every Wednesday Kick bar has ladies night. Everything for the ladies is free. Kick also has a nightly happy hour from 6-11 were everything is half price.
Lastly, the alley that extends from Shooters to The Tree and terminates by the Sanlitun Police Station is under construction. Expect dust, dirt, and a generally high-heel unfriendly environment.

The Newest Muse, said to be a bit more upscale than the other two locations, is opening this Saturday.
The Hotdog King, will open next door. According to Blaine, the owner, The Hot dog King 热狗王 will offer two honest to God American hot dogs served on real buns and real condiments plus a beer for 25RMB! With an outside deck and inside hot dog bar The Hot dog King may just take the crown.
Pure Girl Bar, the bar that was closed because of a drug bust has relocated across the street. No news when it will open.
A new Pakistani Restaurant will open on the second floor next to Luga's Pho Pho restaurant. No news on when it will open but it looks close.
Lastly, 9.9 Bar adds more competition to the already crowded and competitive street. |
