What are all children in awe of at one stage of their development? No, I wasn't thinking of Barbie. Think more of little boys. Yes - you got it - dinosaurs! Did you know that there is a dinosaur "museum" in Beijing? During the Christmas holidays when my son was climbing the walls with boredom and it was REALLY cold, somewhere from the back of my brain, a little memory popped out and told me I should take my little one to see the dinosaurs. I tried to find the number via 114 by trying "konglong bowuguan" and different variations of that but to no avail. Finally, I called the zoo and asked them what the correct name is, as it is located opposite the zoo. It is called the Gu Dongwu Guan, and is actually part of the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Gu jizhui dongwu yanjiu suo.
Upon arrival, I saw a huge green dinosaur outside and pointed it out to my son - first a look of awe, then a giggle....I thought, I'm onto a winner here....
Once inside, I had to fork out Rmb20 for a ticket (small kids get in free). As you enter the first room, there are huge reconstructed dinosaurs which rise high above you. There are also fossils and Ostrich eggs and lots of things in glass cases that my son wasn't interested in. Upstairs, my son managed to get in to one of the exhibits and as he was already there, with the dinosaur, I snapped a photo, but warned him to quickly come out before anyone saw us. It's not a great museum compared with similar things in Europe but we spent a good hour or so there. And, although my son was disappointed there weren't any real dinosaurs to pet, he was happy with not just the bones, but also with his brontasaurus from the gift shop, which he promptly put on a leash to take home.
