My Chinese sister-in-law arrived from England and was extremely excited about how close we lived to this hot pot joint. From the outside it looks, well, like nothing much. And the 45 minutes we spent in the sparsely decorated entry with two toddlers and 150 of our newest friends was, well, not much fun frankly. But it did build a level of anticipation and if we hadn't had the kids with us, there are worse ways to spend an hour than sipping soya milk and eating snacks. The nail bar in the waiting area was hilarious and a wee bit stinky, but hey, if you are waiting an hour for hot pot, I can think of worse ways to pass your time.
Upstairs turned the experience around for me 100%. Great food, spicy broth that brought tears to the eyes of our family's most die hard chili fans, a white broth that was tasty and a nice contrast, fresh ingredients, high chairs and a purple themed decor that was relatively tasteful. The service was attentive and generally not overbearing.
This is the kind of place where you go for an evening. It suits entertaining out of town guests or business collegues, and the food exceeds expectations. Be sure to order the "one long noodle" and the end of your meal which is stretched via a dance by a member of the staff to the delight of your eyes and tastebuds. |

I fell in love with hotpot during my first week in China a few years ago. Since then I've been searching for the perfect hotpot restaurant. Of course I may not have appreciated Haidilao those years ago since I had not yet been "trained" to handle spicy. But having a Sichuan girlfriend has changed that quickly. It was she who recommended this restaurant to me. Among the Sichuan circles I have in Beijing, they all agree that Haidilao is the most authentic Sichuan-style hotpot. Firstly, they pay attention to the environment: it is quite comfortable and ambient, with easy lighting, well-spaced and sized tables and comfortable seating. Secondly, and what they are famous for, is their service. My girlfriend makes a point to continuously remind me that they were ranked no.1 in service in Beijing restaurants by a Chinese restaurant guide last year. And I can see why. Even during the dinner rush, it was never more than 5-10 seconds before service arrived. The food all came promptly. They will even help you to put some of the tricky items in the pot for you (eg. the ducks blood dish, which comes raw and so is soft and difficult to manoeuvre, but I highly recommend ordering it). They have little bags for your cell phone, and even have one for your glasses with a little microfiber cloth inside! As well, if you are having a hard time filling out the order list (a plain white paper with only Chinese and no pictures) ask to see the menu, complete with pictures, and the servers will help you fill it out for you. Now the most important point may be food quality. Their yuanyang hotpot (half-spicy, half-clear) is amazing. The spicy side may kick you back a bit, and eat with caution if your friends ask for 特辣 (super spicy). However everything is amazingly fresh, from the duck's blood that isn't precooked as it is in most hotpot places, to the crispy vegetables and the non-frozen meat. Highly recommended. I'm hungry now just writing about it. |
