| As I clack along the tunnel to Haiku, in very high shoes which usually live at the back of my cupboard, I feel a Bridget Jones moment coming on. So many people welcome us, but I can't smile because I have to concentrate on not falling over. Hatsune seems to be a bit of a hit for localnoodles reviewers as pointed out by Jonesy, but Haiku has a bar which serves delicious cocktails. I am definitely now more of a Haiku fan than a Hatsune fan, although actually I think the food is better at Hatsune. For a swanky fabulous evening out - get dressed up and pop over to Haiku. |

| Haiku has always been my pick for dining with a group of friends or when late dinner is unavoidable after a performance at the Egg or attending an event that serves minimal food. However, the last two weeks when i was there, i was very frustrated that almost every wine that you asked from the list, is "out-of-stock"! This is unacceptable for a restaurant such as this. The first when I was there with corporate bosses and they were selecting better wines (above the RMB thousand range) where only after the EIGHTH selection, were we lucky to get what we wanted. Sakes suffered the same. Third attempt only got us what we wanted. Then last weekend, with another group, we ordered less expensive wines (between RMB 400-500) and ended up with just ONE bottle as the next same bottle was "out-of-stock." Tried to order several others but same answer. Finally, the fourth attempt, we got what we wanted. Sadly, the bottle was so off that you could smell pungent raisins... Cmon Haiku... please get you wines in order, it is afterall next to a lounge bar. |

The thing with Haiku is that its ideal if you need to impress someone- you walk down the narrow dimly lit tunnel to the entrance of the main club section which is mega cool looking then and find your way to Haiku on the far side. It is a bit pretentious in the way they keep the regular tables empty but then if you want one you gotta book ahead- supply and demand.
Sitting in the kiddie chairs at the sushi bar isn't that great and you do feel a bit hemmed in- as for the food, the few times i have been here it was OK, not as good as Hatsune but not too far off it. My favourite menu choice is the popcorn shrimp, it is a must try if you go. The Philly roll is also a good choice.
If you just want good sushi Haiku isn't for you- if you want to look good and be surrounded by groups of well dressed foreigners, it ticks the box |

AWFUL! That's the only word I can use to describe Haiku. I had some guests (relatives) who were in town and wanted to bring them to a Japanese place since they are tired of all the Beijing duck and Chinese food and also because we love Japanese food. Haiku was has just been open for a few months at that time and I wanted to try it since I have been to Hatsune a couple of times and I found it decent. I also couldn't think of any other Japanese resto at that time that is close to somewhere we can have drinks after.
We ordered the usual, sashimi and tried the rolls. The fish was not fresh (similar to cheap 70-120rmb eat all you can Japanese restos) and the rolls just sucked!
High-end Japanese: NO WAY (quality of food) Nice Ambiance : Yes Service : Average
I would stick with Hatsune if I were to choose between the 2

The sashimi and other menu items are less stellar, but go here for rolls. Excellent to say the least!
I suggest the Roxy Rollito, the 119 Roll and the Princess Li Roll. Spicy, fatty and tasty. Can't get enough!

What is all the whoop-de-do about Haiku? Okay - yes, the food is really good but our table service was typical - lots of service people but no one really paying attention to you when you want a drink, when you want to order, when you want the check, etc....
The bar area is one of the nicest I've seen in Beijing but I find it laughable that at 8pm after dinner they won't allow you to sit at a couch table because they are "full"....the bar only had two people in it when we were directed away from the couches to the barstool section in the middle. When we protested that we really only wanted one cocktail and relax after our dinner we were given a really hard time with the excuse that "at 10pm we will be full". Perhaps it takes some people 2 hours to drink a cocktail but not me! To be fair I understand that 2 people occupying a table is not in the best interest of the bar and we would not have insisted if the bar was hopping..but it wasn’t. They did finally give in but in all honesty if we didn't have to grovel for our seat, we might have opted to stay there longer and drink more!
I was really disappointed in the restaurant area ambiance - it completely felt like a cafeteria to me: raw concrete floor, blonde scandinavian type chairs with seat cushions that threaten to shoot across the room if it isn’t attached to the seat just-so. Yes, it is minimalist and some people dig it - I guess I'm just not a big fan. However, the sushi bar area looks like a fun place to sit and next time we just might try to muscle our way in there instead of getting a table - they don’t take reservations for this area so you have to take your chances.
Overall, the food and sake = yum but the table service and restaurant ambience could use some attention. |

| Haiku has become my go-to place for a special night out of sushi and other Japanese dishes. The ambience is great, and the food superb, the only problems are the poor selection of sakes and the rather poor level of service. |

But Of Course.
I agree that the food at this place is amazing, and the drinks are good quality.
The interior is fantastic: very minimal, spacious, and chic.
And as a New Yorker (the city!), I'm all about High Snobiety, and what not.
However, I leave my heart with Hatsune.

| Raw Fish Fetish |
| I have a thing for raw fish. Sushi stands as my favorite food! If you love it as much as I do then here are several restaurants to try. |
