| I don’t understand why people are even talking about this bar. Frankly, it’s depressing. It’s not comfortable, there is nothing that gives it particular character and the clientele are all old drunkards and their wives / girlfriends / wives & girlfriends. Music selection is abhorrent and so are the entertainment choices. When I go to a bar I’m looking for something more than just liquor and beer to keep me entertained. The James Joyce resoundingly fails to deliver. Two stars for convenient roadside location. |

The James Joyce is Irish owned and the bar manager lived in Ireland for 9 years, she even swears like an Irish woman. Bottom line the JJ is a good and frienldy bar that has built up a regular expat crowd in the few months it is open. Many a weekend night it is a full house and when the wood fire is lit it feels very cosy. There is some work to be done to improve this bar but I am sure this will all be resolved very soon. I am Irish and other than an Irish barman and more Irish customers it does very much feel like a bar from home, except the smoking.

| Locals hangout. Older crowd for sure. Very close to Sanlitun so could serve as an alternative drinking hole. Chuan place next door. I like the long bar and the lady serving beers behind it is kind. Other than the name there isn't much about this bar that feels Irish. |

| Walking into this bar was awkward. The few tables that had customers were stacked with old Chinese people who looked at me as if to say, “looky here, we got one!” A older Chinese woman walked up to me and greeted me in English and then the rest of the staff tried to look ready for business. Inside the seating looks uncomfortable and the music playing overhead although Irish just felt contrived. Durty Nelly’s feels much more Irish than this bar. The kiss of death for me was peering behind the bar and discovering liquor bottles hanging from the wall upside down with the measurement devices fixed to each. As soon as I saw them I just thought, this place will be gone soon. I for one will never frequent a bar that measures its alcohol that way. It reminds me that management doesn’t trust their bartenders and are in it to maximize profits. There is nothing fun about that type of atmosphere. And not to add insult to injury but I just don’t know how one can run an Irish bar without at least one Irish person in on the operation. Maybe even an unusually jovial Chinese would suffice in a pinch but what I felt when I entered the door was amateur hour trying to share or even replicate on Paddy’s successes. |
