I went to NTT on a Friday to appreciate their newly installed pool table on the 2nd floor. The service was just rude the whole way through. Firstly the waitress who took my order made a sly comment about how I'm choosing the cheapest beer on tap (15 yuan Tsingdao draft, good value if you don't care about 'face'). I was willing to overlook that when the pool game started up. But the aggression didn't end. The chefs hovered around the table, warning my friend to keep his cigarette away from the table, and then telling me to "stop sitting" on a table I was merely leaning against, slightly.
But the coup-de-gras came as we were leaving. One arrogant chef accused my friend of stealing the board chalk, you know, the little piece of chalk worth 5 fen that is used to write your name on the board for playing pool. He followed us as we were leaving, saying we stole the chalk, and a manager even came over and got involved. Unbelievable. Not only had he not stolen the chalk, but even if he had pocketed a piece of chalk in an inebriated state (as sponsored by them), was it truly such a valuable thing as to require calling my friend a chalk thief in front of an avid 2nd floor audience, disturbed from their banter and focused exclusively on this scene?
I love pool, and they have a good pool table and it's not too crowded. Too bad the chefs and manager are ridiculously rude.

I never intend to go to nearby the tree yet every once in a while I just end up there. It reminds me of iHop back home. Nobody starts out the evening saying, “Let’s go to iHop” yet at three in the morning, there you and your friends are, in iHop. The next morning, one can gauge how drunk one was by asking friends - in a raspy alcoholic dry voice - did we really go to iHop? The answer is of course, yes. Drinks and beers are okay but honestly if my friends didn’t go neither would I. There is little reason for me to go here unless it is to get away from others. In that case I would probably opt to go to nearby bar (no pun intended) instead. Overall, nothing bad to say. Nothing good either. I’ll give it 3 stars.

Nearby the Tree is the place you want to head down to when you want to eat good pizza in Sanlitun. Everyone is probably familiar with The Tree (or Hidden Tree) pizza, and how good it is.
Unlike The Tree, that is always packed, Nearby the Tree is quiet enough that you can get service right away and you get your pizza directly from The Tree. The staff get takeaway from The Tree and bring it to Nearby the Tree.
The beer is very cheap during happy hour and worth the visit starting from 6pm.

We dropped into The Tree last night to get directions to Nearby The Tree (NTT). As usual, The Tree was lively, brimming with laughter and conversation and had many seats filled, with more people streaming in (and it was only 6 p.m.)! Nearby The Tree (North of Yashow, West of the Police Station) offered a much quieter scenario.

From 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., we were the only customers on the second floor. So, my first recommendation is that NTT is a great place to go if you want to step out of the hustle and bustle of Sanlitun for a short reprieve, without actually leaving the heart of Sanlitun.

Our waitress, Julia, could not have been lovelier! Bright, warm, friendly, professional and efficient, Julia tipped the scales in transforming our overall experience from good to great!

Known for their pastas, and for their extensive selection of Belgium beer, we ordered the Set Menu (this month only), which offered Soup, Appetizer, Pasta, Dessert and tea/coffee for just 99 rmb (of course we ordered beer as well).

The Minestrone soup, and the Tomato/Buffalo Mozzarella, were quite good. The Cheese Plate was great for sharing and included a variety of cheeses, dried fruit, walnuts and focaccia bread.

The Braised Beef and Vegetable Ravioli with Red Wine Tomato Glace had a zingy, spicy kick. The Forest Mushroom Ravioli with Pancetta and Tomato Cream Sauce unfortunately had a Cheez-Whiz (jarred, processed cheese) taste to it, which may actually be favored by children… and of course Cheez-Whiz fans! Both pastas were served quite al dente. No vegetarian options were offered as part of the main dishes on their set-menu special. The Waffle with Kiwi, Fresh Cream and Mixed Berry Coulis was light and delicious, making it a definite must!

My overall recommendation for choosing this restaurant depends entirely on the experience that you are seeking. If you are looking for a very quiet place to chill out, without distraction, then NTT gets full marks (with perhaps a point taken away for the lighting being a bit too bright). Top marks also go to the value of their set dinner special, which offered quite a range of food for just 99 rmb. If returning, I would order slightly differently (and would ask for the pasta to be cooked a bit longer…making me a mere commoner, I realize). Tying the whole experience together was undoubtedly the exceptional service from our waitress (who was very interested in knowing exactly what I was jotting in my notebook)!

I had showed up late at the tree and one of the staff walked me over to Nearby the Tree as i had’nt been there before. It’s a bit off the beaten track and is 2 blocks down from Ciros Pomodoro. The staff are terrific and very quick to refill drinks. The owner is a Belgian guy hence the wide selection of …Belgian beer and other dark beers. Sadly this place continues to be empty other than Friday and Saturday nights. There is no discernable reason for this other than the second tree lacks a compelling reason to go versus the Tree, which is just round the corner and better known.

As for the bizzaro reviewer below, don’t worry it’s going to be OK, there are plenty other places for you to eat pizza on the second floor. TGI Fridays has a 2nd floor for you to eat pizza on. Best call ahead and check with the manager to make sure they are ready for your arrival.

Nearby The Tree has many things going for it, but missed the mark on a few things that would have made the meal really great. It's ambiance was great and offered a very modern and clean feel. We were the only two people there that night, which was a bit strange but nice since we had the service all to ourselves. The complimentary focaccia bread was warm and delicious, and a bowl of freshly grated Parmesan cheese all to ourselves was a nice surprise here in China. Both the Trofie with pesto sauce(¥55) and the Ricotta & spinach tortelloni arrabiata(¥55) were served too al dente, and the spiciness of the tortelloni was almost overpowering. Another complaint was that the portions were on the small side. For dessert we split the Belgium Waffles, which were very tasty and accompanied with delicious melted chocolate, honey, raspberry preserves and sugar for toppings.

Overall this is a pretty good Italian restaurant, but the few flaws are something to be aware of.

When I first walked into Nearby the Tree I thought it was shockingly similar to its brother The Tree, however I was pleasantly surprised when I was taken to the upstairs which was a pristine, unique restaurant which is worth a visit for sure. The open kitchen allows one to walk up and watch them cook for you right there. After (or instead of) a good meal try the homemade Belgian waffles or cheesecake. While I have not yet had the cheesecake, if it is anything like the Belgian waffles, which are as deliciously authentic as it gets, I want some cheesecake too.

Just a few minutes walk from The Tree, Nearby the Tree is a two-storey complex featuring your typical Tree-like bar on the first floor and your untypical bistro on the second. Head upstairs and the atmosphere is entirely different with its stylish décor, alluring couches and coffee tables. Serving up pasta as its speciality, the seafood chowder (¥35) is excellent and the Parma-ham tortellini also a favourite, (¥75). We also recommend the Paglia e fieno carbonara (¥50), which will have you savouring every bite. Of course, any Tree experience would not be complete without a couple of Belgian beers, but the list is complemented by some excellent Wines as well.

okay - two words - FORGET IT. okay, i will endlessly rave about the OLD tree and its unique, pleasantly surprising 5 star service provided by its local staff (the only other comparable place i like so far is ALAMEDA with its orgasm inducing efficiency during the lunch hour crush of corporate power lunch types - think the GM of the new swire property hotel with his snazzy hermes ties - - - but i say all hail local staffer "susan" from sichuan, who serves the smoking section under the glass encased smoking area with confidence and professionalism - hats off to you susan! - well, back to my point about service - at the "new" TREE, ***FORGET*** about dining on the sterilized second floor, despite its newly designed, overly pretentious cuisine...not to mention its r*u*d*e* (i thought only the KROS nest new manager was an uber snob), long black haired-asian, cell phone jabbering manager who does NOT allow any pizza from the first floor onto the second floor (even though our pizza was from the old f*cking tree, in a box, and we had no f*cking intention to eat on the second floor anyways - we just wanted to see the space because we are planning a huge team building event for the front office team at the hotel...when you approach a guest, ANY guest, you may want to greet them 1st and ask how they may be helped - NOT preaching to them, "you cannot bring that pizza box from the ground floor to the second floor..." while still yakking away on your mobile phone and slouching on your oh so sexy, new fangled, oversized pillow cushions...which will remain untouched because no one wants to be around your putrid presence...you did not know if the "guests" were simply trying to source a chinese new year team building location for the grand hyatt beijing front office team - well say goodbye, sayonara, auf wiedersehen, and zai tama de jian to that...and congratulations to the gulou based bed bar who will host a bunch of loud, fun loving, BILL PAYING and PROFESSIONAL guest service personnel come early feb 2008...(details to follow) i will not even go into the new tree's menu since the "manager" managed to give me and my date such a bad taste in our mouth that we voted with our feet OUT the front door into the sub zero temperature to head to the bed bar at gulou...in any case, the pizza box was actually take away for the asst dir of F&B at the grand hyatt beijing who had a craving but was too sick with the beijing flu to leave his hotel room, was bought from the OLD tree because i LOVED their service so much) mind you manager lady, beijing has so many restaurants, only the ones which exceptional service will be allowed to survive come 2008...so...be prepared to have more and more voters with their feet unless you majorly consider some behavior modification - like 2 days two late!!! i v-o-w to make sure ALL of beijing knows...and to the lady on the phone...get bent and time to get retrained (come and find us at the hyatt - we will gladly retain (aka brainwash with hyatt doctrines) you with a smile and comp sign you a fresh squeezed OJ in the fountain lounge to boot), or just go home and leave the managing to one of the smiling girls from the OLD tree (green tee shirt and all)>: | by BT
