Superchunk ..
I smell ice cream
     7/4/2010
You know sometimes you wish you never left your apartment. Today, I decided to skip my usual destination, Union, for Panino Gusto. Hey its closer and they have electrical sockets (only on the ground floor) so why not.

The fun started when I asked the staff to close the front door because it was making for a sauna like experience. while 28c may promote healthfullness and wisdom its just not any fun if your from a western climate.

We compromised and half the door remained open, after at first closing it, but presumably becoming too cold for the staff to handle. I get my panini and its effectively half a loaf of bread with a mcdonalds happy meal salad in the middle. Maybe thats how it is in Italy but its too much bread for me. Charge more for a better product, dont try to play it cheap- it never works in the long run.

OK so soon as I finish the food this stench begins to overtake the senses- the other diners and I debated the source: Flatulence? Maybe. Warm garbage? Stale dairy products? It was a tough call which became tougher when the doors where thrown open and a litre of febreeze was unloaded to ostensibly stench the nauseating aroma. Of course 10 mins later its warn off and its now 30c +.

The next concern was 'did I just eat what that smell is coming from'? I'll know in a few hours no doubt.

On the plus side they dont charge for water which comes with ice, the internet connect is OK and the prices are better than elsewhere. Its also worth noting that none of the patrons got up and left, or raised too much of a ruckus. I guess when you have lived in a Beijing for a while you dont sweat the small stuff.

As counter intuitive as it sounds, the better western dining options when it comes to service in Beijing are often owned by non westerners. Owning a business targeted at foreigners requires a degree of customization in order to provide an authentic experience. As was the case today, there was no staff member that resembled a floor manager-without this person standards are not maintained and everybody goes on auto pilot.

Bitching so you don't have to

If you are in this restaurant you are either new to town, out of alternatives or you have no taste. There can be no other explanation for supporting such a consistently shoddy establishment.
Today, begrudgingly, I was coerced into going because the kitchen staff didn't show up at the Kiosk (Save that one for a different review). We arrived at just after noon, sat down, and upon ordering were told many of the items were "sold out". Sold out at noon? Did we miss the rush? Come on! So we ordered other items. 20 minutes after we all ordered the waitress tells us that one of the dishes is no longer available. Did it take her 20 minutes to discover they didn't have the pasta? Sigh. Another dish was ordered instead. The same waitress immediately begins serving everyone’s food but at odd intervals which seemed almost purposely 5 to 10 minutes apart. I'm with 4 others so the anger and frustration I feel cannot be publicly vented without dancing on our beloved social contract. (Goddamn social contract!!) I order a coke. The waitress serves it to me by literally reaching across the person to my right - while he is trying to eat - one item at a time. First the glass, then the coke. I am screaming inside.
The sandwich that I order arrives with three (3) slices of prosciutto between two 5x5 pieces of bread. Some lettuce and a spread are thrown in for posterity. I mean really. Are we so desperate for western food that we are okay with this? I am shocked that despite all of the bad press this restaurant has received they have made no effort to change.
What a crying shame! Three times, three bad experiences. Never again.

great taste bad decisions

What Panino Guisto lacks on the sandwich side it makes up for on the desserts. The brownie and the lemon cake are my favorites. If they would add a scoop of vanilla ice cream to the brownie I might just visit daily.

I just came back from the most surreal experience I've had in China.
First, I ordered an eggplant sandwich, and it came out with no eggplant on it. Instead of taking it back and fixing it, they brought me out 3 slices of eggplant (for a sandwich cut into fours) about 15 minutes later. I also ordered a Diet Coke that didn't come for another 30 minutes when I realized it hadn't come and asked again.

Then the bill came, and all hell broke loose. They charged us 16 RMB for the french fries, but the menu said 12RMB. We asked the waiter, and he started saying that it was 16, so we asked to see the menu. After a delay in which we're guessing they tried to change the price on the menu bc there was a fresh indentation over the number but no ink, the waiter brought out the menu, which said 12 RMB. We started telling him that it said 12, so they should charge 12, when I saw the manager. I motioned him over, and WOW!

I told him that the menu said 12 RMB, but they were charging 16RMB. He said that the price changed, what is he supposed to do about it. I said that they should either charge us 12 or change the menu. He said that it was 16 kuai and asked why I had such a bad attitude (at this point he was yelling), which shocked me. I just looked at him, and my friends started talking. My friend said that we didn't have a bad attitude, but you should charge the same price as what's on the menu. The manager got really mad, said he had a bad attitude too, that he managed three great restaurants and knows what he's doing, but if we were going to be so rude about it, he would charge us 12 (which he didn't do). Then he went inside.

The waitress came out and started apologizing to us repeatedly. We were kind of in a haze. My friends live across the street and eat there several times a week. I usually go every weekend. We just told her that we wouldn't be back after that. Hearing that (because he was just inside the door), the manager walked back out and started yelling again something about we could go eat crap at Panino Teca but their restaurant was better or something... clearly anger issues that had nothing to do with us. No idea where that came from. The waiters rushed him back inside.

We paid the full bill (16 kuai for the fries) and left. We turned back around as we were walking away, and he was standing outside. He flipped us his middle finger to make sure we knew how he felt.

So, there ya go! We will NEVER be back!! I will look up what the other two restaurants he runs are, and I guarantee none of us will go there either!

Went there last week. The service was nice and prompt. The menu is too much like Panino Teca but anyways... The sandwich was good and I was pleasantly surprised that they do offer other dishes than the usual bread and salad. They have breakfast, pasta, soups (stuff of the day). The desserts seemed yummy too.
The toasted sandwich was huge and came with a small salad. Honestly, it was good and I didn't finish it, too huge for me...

Panino Giusto is Italian for good sandwich and the name is a an apt fit. With two levels and outside seating in good weather, the restaurant is clean, the quality of the food is consistent and the portions are good value for the price.

If there is one "miss" it is that the service can be spotty. But it is just as clear that the owners are working hard to train up and retain a core group of good employees.

Only open since December of 2008, it is tucked conveniently beside April Gourmet and stays open to a respectable 11:30 (kitchen stops taking orders at 11).

Free wifi is available and their Americano Coffee is a robust, full-bodied "cup of Joe" at a very reasonable RMB18

Their salads are fresh and frankly huge, they have a great selection of pastries and deserts and I'm told they are currently toying with the idea of a 6am daily opening to provide for the "morning coffee on the go" customer.

For customers living nearby they even offer free delivery. Clearly I'm a fan and it seems pretty much a given that should you drop by and experience it for yourself, you will be too.

Handle in the Middle

Wow – I am stunned how amazingly sub-average my sandwich was. Last night my friend and I went at her suggestion. She has gone before so knew what and how to order. I had not so and so was stuck with bread. I’m not exaggerating.

I ordered the beef with arugola and Goat Cheese sandwich – un-toasted. The sandwich came on a large white plate with a tiny dose of salad. The presentation was nice. To say the sandwich is huge is to state the truth. It was at least a 7 inch square. I chose to cut it in quarters before starting. The first quarter I started in on had one leaf of arugola, no beef, no goat cheese. Bread. That was it! The second portion had everything I mentioned above but only in 1/16 of an inch increments (1/16 of an inch of ingredients + 1.5 inches of bread = bread taste). The rest of the sandwich fell between having nothing and one slice of filling.

My friend had been there before so she knew to pay 10 rmb extra for twice the filling.

Service was courteous and prompt. Environment was comfortable modern. Food, fell well short of my expectation.

jack of all trades

In a city full of great restaurants and casual dining establishments, this one rates at the bottom. Its one of those places that's right around the corner from where I live but I'd never heard anything about it so I had never stopped to try them out.

Well, last weekend after church, I decided to see what they were all about. Arriving there for an early lunch, the weather was perfect so we got a table outside. It wasn't crowded at all (less than 25% of the seats were occupied) so we were hopeful that service would be quick. While they did promptly take our orders, the actual delivery of food and drinks was a whole other story! Now, I understand that sometimes quality takes time. But 20+ minutes to get a coffee and an over-priced orange juice?... Ridiculous! And 30+ minutes for my sandwich? I can phone order a similar sandwich from another local sandwich place (see my other reviews) and get it delivered to my house typically in less than 20 minutes.

In a city of so many restaurants, the price and service of this one rate on the mediocre end of the spectrum....

I've been here a couple of times, since its in my 'hood. I hate going here. I always hold out hope that it will be good and frankly, the only time I've ever liked them is when I took the sandwiches to go and didn't have to deal with all the other b@#$hit that goes with the place. I went a couple a weeks ago, asked if they had WIFI (which they said they did), only to order and then be told by the manager that they WIFI had been broken for awhile, but rest assured, someone will be coming tomorrow to fix it. I felt duped. Then, I returned on Easter for brunch on the patio...It took three of us waving menues like madmen to get the attention of a server and another 20 minutes to get an orange juice and a coffee we ordered. Apparently, they have the drink production capacity of a monkey. Actually, we ordered two orange juices, but canceled mine, since it was going to take more time. The meal was marginal (egg-bacon-cheese panini that was eh, and a chicken panini--both completely unremarkable). Getting the bill was another ridiculous interaction--we first asked out waitress, waited 5 min, then asked the manager (who also forgot) and then walked inside and asked to have our bill brought out. All in all, if I'm not being ignored at this place, I'm waiting to be duped by false advertising and then fighting to pay for it all. Seriously, if you are in the same neighborhood, try Club Sandwich or Comptoirs de France.

i came here last wk with some friends & had a slight run-in w/ the owner/ manager (young, moody, short, pale, ginger guy) (not to be mistaken for the nice tall guy) who was incredibly rude. If he was the owner/ manager, he didn't do a good job of resolving our problem, instead, he spent the whole time giving us daggers & nasty stares, inbetween serving customers & publicly shouting at his staff.

the food is generally ok, although the cakes are pretty overpriced. we usually come here as we work nearby, but we definately won't be returning. The waiters are very nice & polite, shame about the little man.
