I just realized that traktir pushkin is Russian for tractor push like how ESPN is sports in Spanish !Check out the big brain on Shane!

I have a long held theory that state of the bathrooms reflect the state of the kitchen at a restaurant. If it’s a mess then you will likely be eating one. It’s a bit like property developers and elevators- if they’re cheap then there is never enough to go round. Here the bathroom was a mess but the rest of the experience turned out to be very good.

Russian food is hearty food, a lot fried meat and potatoes and other high carb dishes that keep you full long after you eat. I ordered a skillet of fried ham and potatoes and also a plate of perogies, which are Russian dumplings. Both were large dishes that could fill a normal person without portion control issues. I received some bread in a basket and when I asked for some butter I was told it would be 5rmb, on top of the bread which was 4rmb. A bit strange but hey at least they were being transparent about things.

There is a beer promotion where you get a pint of a German wheat beer for 35 rmb. The server spoke English very well and managed to schedule the arrival of my first and second dishes perfectly, such a rare thing in this city. I know local food does not arrive in the same kind of order as western food but it never ceases to amaze me how often this reality is not kept in mind. If you’re a western restaurant then you should be able to get this right 24/7. And its not the staffs fault btw, a 21 yr old earning 1000rmb a month cannot be just expected to function autonomously or even partially. The solution is to find a floor manager that instills the necessary concentration amongst the staff and makes sure that the handoff from the kitchen is seamless. But then this is an extra wage and what cheap a$$ Beijing restaurant owner wants this burden?

At the end of the meal I got some chewing gum, a nice touch. Aside from the college dorm restroom this is a well managed business with a decent menu.

A great and very reasonable place for having russian wannabe food. Tastes and flavors are deep and the is worth the money. Very easy access, since is next to the Dongzhimen subway station. They also have some chinese dishes available.
