I would love to say that this was an amazing experience that I'd highly recommend, but after having a few days to think bout it, I'm still a bit undecided about the experience. All of the food was great and the wait staff was excellent, but there was just something lacking.

Chengfu is a unique setting, a "private" restaurant with 4 private dining rooms located across from Zhongnanhai. Because of the chef's connections, you're getting the same ingredients that are eaten by the country's leaders on a daily basis. Everything is organically grown and of the best quality.

The cheapest menu is a little under RMB600 for a multi-course meal. While everything we ate, from the interesting tofu soup to the duck to the fish was excellent and perfectly executed, there were few dishes that were absolutely knock your socks off.

The wait staff, while being extremely attentive, was almost too much so. The LP and I had a private room to ourselves but the constant entrance of the wait staff made us feel ackward about having private conversations, plus, the staff would fill our tea cups after seemingly almost every sip.

It was cool to have the feeling of a state official for a night, the food was great, and this would be an interesting spot for a special ocassion or to take a visitor. However, I don't think this place offers the best meal you'll have in Beijng and, for the price, that's pretty disappointing.

I am a little disappointed by this place. Hearing all the great reviews, I brought a group of out of town guests here who wanted a nice quiet place with a bit of atmosphere and history. When we showed up of course there is no sign, which is kind of neat, and you are then taken inside a very tiny courtyard. The courtyard has just been renovated, and in my opinion is nothing special or out of ordinary. When we were taken to our private room, it was just like a room in any other restaurant, a flat screen on the wall, some tacky ornamental designs etc. The food was top quality, some of the best Chinese food I have had, but I have paid ALLOT less, and had just as good. Additionally, there was no commentary to go with the food you were eating, and the service-people barely interacted with my guests. For a place charging 600 RMB plus per person, and going after the "historical" edge, I would think they would have someone trying to mix up the dinner with some neat commentary on the dishes, Mao's chef etc.

Yes this place is semi-cool and the food is top quality, but it is not worth it for the price and just so-so experience.

I have overrated every restaurant I have ever reviewed. This weekend I was privileged to visit ChengFu courtyard for the finest meal I've had in Beijing. Don't get me wrong, Maison Boulud is excellent (as it Agua), but I'm pretty sure I'm not getting the finest French or Spanish food in the world. With ChengFu, I'm very confident that I've now experienced the best of Chinese Cuisine.
Located in a NanChangJie, CFC serves organic, home grown food usually only served to leaders of state and CCP elite in Zhongnanhai. The 580-1280RMBpp price tag definitely raises ones expectations, but the food, service and atmosphere make it worth your while. The price included a private room, 8 courses, plus an excellent set of snacks and your own army of servers. We enjoyed several seafood courses(including a divine housemade cheese stuffed deep friend prawn with Har Gau bunnies), but the signature dish is the HongShaoRou--served in a baked pumpkin with rice and a 24-hr roasted hunk of lean-n-fat goodness. It was incredible.
Don't forget to enjoy some of the huangjiu that exclusive to Zhongnanhai, but shared with CFC because of their close relationship w/ the leadership compound. I can't recommend it enough...you'd be a fool to leave the Jing without seeing how the elites here dine out.

ps...ask to see Mao's bamboo lunchbox
