We can all probably name a restaurant or two that gets too much love from the expat magazines, or on this site, or dianping, or fantong, but there are very few spots that are beloved by all these sources, Da Dong stands atop that list. Expats love it because the food's great and its very foreigner friendly.

Peking duck is Beijing's most famous dish, its the one thing every foreigner coming to Beijing has heard of, but its typically very ordinary and most visitors (and even locals) don't grasp why its so famous. Even for Beijing natives who've had years of average duck are shocked when they sample that on offer at Da Dong.

Beyond duck, Da Dong is one of the few places that focus on interesting, modern interpretations and presentation and the restaurant does it in a way that is functional, everything still comes out delicious.

Da Dong does have its flaws, the annoying service charge and insane RMB8 charge for the duck condiments (yes, every spot in the city has a charge, but RMB8 is WAY over the top). And while the duck is reasonably priced, the prices and portions of everything else can get sort of crazy.

That said, this is the spot to take a guest (the Dong Si Shi Tiao location is a must), be they local or foregin, to impress them and have the city's greatest duck.

... I know what you're going to say - Da Dong's duck isn't as good as other, even cheaper options in the city these days. And you're dead right. Skip the duck and tuck into some of their other delicacies - River Snow Ribs, venison in chili oil and even their Gongbao chicken are mouthwatering, light and utterly, utterly beautiful to look at. Chef Da Dong has diversified into other and better dishes - case in point, he makes the only sea cucumber dish I have ever found palatable - and it is for these, not so much his Superneat duck (which I still enjoy, for my sins) that he will be remembered. He also knows how to appeal to a Western palate. Rock on, Da Dong!

All Beijing duck restaurants seem to go into decline a few years after they become well-known, especially in tour books and on touring websites. Dadong is no exception. A long term resident of Beijing, I used to rate it among the best, but since the opening of the third location, and since becoming jammed with foreign visitors, Dadong has slipped badly. Just in the last year, I would say it has gone from a 4 star to a 1 star. Prices have gotten outrageous and portions stingy. In addition to the sky rocketing menu prices, they add a 10% service charge.
Presentations are elaborate, so bring your checkbook and a camera but don't be too hungry. Dadong has begun to charge a premium for the traditional way of carving and serving a Peking duck, and even though we paid it, they still more or less hacked the ducks up, rather than carefully carve the crisp skin and then the meat. They charge for each guest set-up of sauces and garnishes, which is quite rare. And each duck at Dadong yields very little to eat, since they carve the top and take the remainder of the ducks into the kitchen.
Service was terrible. I ordered for a table of ten at 6:10. We had almost no food served until 7:30, and tieban - cast iron hot dishes came out stone cold. Rather than serve in the order we asked, when food came, everything came at once. We did not finish until 9:00pm, and left amid profuse apologies from the manager for the miserable service. Sorry to say, this is one to avoid now.

I have not yet had enough Beijing Duck to say what is the best in town, but this has to be pretty close. As for the main course, we elected to try the low-fat version (which is cheaper) and all agreed that we did not feel that it compromised on taste.

Our table was ready at the time of our reservation and service was excellent. The attendants were polite and helpful without being overbearing. They also spoke English well; there is only so much "wo yao zhei ge" anyone wants to say or hear. They lost half a star because my appetizers never came, but I also could have asked for them a second time and I am confident it would have been attended to.

We were particularly pleased with the beverage selection. The Blueberry-Mango juice was delicious. Each of the dishes was tasty; some in a surprising and unexpected way. My wife found that she enjoyed foods that she otherwise does not prefer, but was willing to try because of the artful presentation.

As for cost, we had 7 people and ordered many drinks and dishes without regard to cost. In the end, it came to about 200 RMB per person. Clearly not the cheapest place in town, but a fine value for the money.

I can recommend Da Dong without hesitation.

I'd heard of Dadong through many circles of friends, and had unknowingly passed it by countless times without ever noticing it. I'm talking about the one just 20m S of SE corner of Changhongqiao, the bridge at Gongti beilu and East 3rd Ring.
I was preceded by about 20 tableless groups, and for the one hour wait or so went for a walk around the Pacific Centre, just West of the bridge. On my return, after still another 15min of lounging around and trying to appreciate the famous names signed onto the wall (including Jackie Chan and I believe a president of a European country), we were seated in the far back room, and then given the exorbitantly oversized menu (with impeccable photos).
You go to a duck place for the duck, and when I go for duck I don't fuss around with quality. So we got the super-lean duck (abuot 240yuan or so). And I was truly impressed. It was sooo crispy and very satisfying. We made the mistake of asking for the house duck soup instead of taking the remaining duck (which can be made into an excellent soup, if you live here and have a kitchen). I would say this was the best duck I've had in Beijing, and so that means I rate it higher than Quanjude and Bianyifang.
Other dishes we ordered were the Chongqing Koushuiji. Again, exceptional, scrumptious, and the best of its kind I've ever eaten. The shame is that for 50yuan you get about four mouthfuls of it, separated into two (very artistic) mini-vases. We also ordered Sichuan Liangfen (thick white gluten strips with spicy flavoring), a mushroom and asparagus dish, and a rice dish. In the end, 400yuan did not equate to the amount of food we had anticipated, and left my group of 3 still hungry after we left. But we weren't going to wait another 20min for more 40yuan vegetables.
Excellent duck, and for that matter, everything, comes at a price. I can imagine tourists loving it though as it's still somewhat cheap if you're traveling on the dollar/euro/pound etc.

Every time I had visitors I took them to Da Dong, mainly the one near sanlitun, but the last time I decided to make a change and go to the Tuanjiehu outlet, and it was a good experience, the quality of the duck and service is equip arable with the main one, I don't know if I was lucky or this place is less busy but I didn't had to wait which is something I don't like at the main outlet.

Though I have not visited all of these duck restaurants, all come recommended. If I have missed any please let me know. In the meantime, get your duck on!
