This place has the best steak I've tried in Beijing, served up in an excellent atmosphere by one of the city's best staffs.
The appetizers here (especially the boerwors) are excellent, the mains (especially those under "specialties") are great, and the desserts are just as good (the creme brulee is one of the best I've had in the city). There are some minor problems, of course, if you pay RMB300+ for a steak, you don't want it to come with french fries. I mean, french fries, with a crazy expensive steak, seriously?!? Also, the waygu burger was extremely disappointing, if its real waygu, why does it need BBQ sauce AND 1000 island dressing?!? At RMB188, its a real ripoff and can't compare to many of the Sanlitun offerings for over RMB100 less.
And now we get to the main issue, the price. With Boulud, the capital's best restaurant, so close by, its hard to fathom paying RMB500+ at Meat & Wine. While I love the food for the most part and the staff makes you feel like a regular by your 2nd visit, the price is what keeps me from coming back more often. |

| I have been to The Meat & Wine Co a number of times now and have come away each time having had an incredible eating experience. The food is a bit pricy, but well worth it because you can taste the quality and creativity in every dish. The first steak I ate there left an lasting impression because it was one of the best steaks I'd eaten in the world - not just in Beijing. The ribs are also a treat, as they are delicious and the portion was more than I could imagine eating. The decor is inspiring, the wine list extensive, and the staff are all very knowledgeable, attentive and hospitable. We were especially taken care of by Darah, an American manager there, who took the time to go through the menu and gave great advice and Richard, the wine sommelier, who helped us perfectly match our meal with an exquisite bottle of wine. I highly recommend going and treating yourself to one of the best locations in Beijing when the outdoor terrace is open, overlooking beautiful Legation Quarter (or Chianmen 23). The other fantastic thing is that they usually have a creative promotion going on. If you're looking to impress a date or client, this is hands down one of the best places to go in Beijing. |

Being from Africa I know what good steaks are. They are real good here. The meat quality I love at this place. The Beef and Pork Ribs is excellent. The sauces they put in is also classy. Check out their wine house salad and you will love it with the sauce. They are pricey but great taste. You can go only once a while not always at this place because of the price. |

| If you get a chance to go on a company outing to the Meat & Wine, don’t pass it up! The steak is amazing, the service flawless, and the location is incredible. I asked for a New York Strip medium rare but leaning toward rare and that’s exactly what I got. I’ve had more trouble getting a steak done correctly in New York than in Beijing! The irony wasn’t lost on me. I also ordered the beef Carpaccio and the more expensive of the two wine flights. Although I didn’t care for the Carpaccio as much as I did my New York Strip, the wine was perfectly paired with my steak. Very positive experience and very highly recommended. Can’t wait for the next company event! |

I went there because of the Ribs promotion (buy one get one free) that is a great offer because the ribs were tasty and juicy as best. They normally come with french fries that are thick and still delicious even cold. Some of us asked if they could change the french fries for something else and it was not a problem. The other great aspect is the service. It started when I called to make the reservation, the girl was polite and directly switched to English when I replied. When we arrived, the table was set, they gave us time to get comfortable before bringing the menu. although my mind was already set for ribs, I wanted to check it out. At first, it is "expensive" but when looking at the portion and quality of the food around I said to myself that it did worth it. The waiters are nice and with a smile, always refilling the glasses of water. One of the foreign managers came to talk to us, respectful and nice as well as the chef. I liked it and I sure will visit them again. |

As far as steakhouses go, this is the TOP! I am rarely impressed with overpriced, under delivering steakhouses, due to mediocre service and food, but the Meat & wine co always delivers. The service from the minute you walk in the door is first rate, the steaks are perfect, and there is a nice variety of cuts and preparations for every taste. The wine list is a superb mix of international blends from around the world. Now, I'm not saying this place isn't expensive - it is way on the high end, with the steaks alone will do you in. But I’m willing to cut back on the psychiatrist for a good steak. Then you have drinks, sides, apps...you can easily blow the rent without even trying.
But if price is not a concern, have a great time and a great meal! If it is, enjoy the camel meat other places call steak. :-)

This South African steakhouse features all the standards, with some SA favorites. We tried the the Biltong Bowl, a South African spiced cured beef--like prosciutto. We enjoyed the beef carpaccio (RMB 88)—the thinly sliced rare filet was drizzled with sesame oil, black and white sesame seeds, roquette leaves and nashi pear. The sweet tangy pear was a delicious compliment to the nutty sesame oil and raw beef. With our main course, we tried a bottle of 2005 Domaine du Tix (RMB 834), which was exceptional. (if it wasn't I would have been pretty upset, given the price). The ribeye (RMB 378)and rumpsteak (RMB 360) came highly recommended. We decided on the spicy, full-bodied Portuguese sauce. As with most high end steakhouses, all cuts of meat are served a la carte. We tried the garlic mashed potatoes (RMB 38), but it was alittle 'eh'. For dessert, we couldn’t pass up the coconut panna cotta with pineapple carpaccio, sago pudding and mint sauce. The panna cotta had a firm and creamy consistency that so many chef’s lack the experience or patience to create. The service was excellent and unobtrusive. I really enjoyed the Wine and Meat Company, but damn, it was expensive. I highly recommend going with your company, visiting parents or on someone else's dime. You'll be treated well and have a great meal. |

Go here if you want one of the best steaks in the city and don't mind paying for it. The management team and executive chef have done a great job of making this consistently great.
I first visited the Meat & Wine Co with my wife. We sat outdoors on the rooftop terrace which overlooks all of the legation quarter -- very nice. We only wished for a table cloth. I had the smaller ribeye (still more steak than one person should eat) and my wife had the filet. Both steaks were prepared as ordered -- a very nice medium rare. The outside was seared to perfection in their house marinade while the inside was cool and rare. We both opted for garlic mashed potatoes -- just great. We had the South African sausage with polenta and sweet red pepper appetizer. We also shared one of their salads (large enough for two people to share) and everything was very fresh, crisp, and cool. The vinaigrette was light and tangy. We shared a chocolate desert that my wife really loved.
As for the wine list -- very, very, nice. It is comparable to the wine list at The Courtyard which is regarded as the best in Beijing.
I have also dinned there with a group of men in one of the private dinning rooms. The staff adeptly handled the large group. We never wanted for anything. I highly recommend The Meat & Wine Co. for a very nice western style business dinner or lunch. If you make prior arrangements with the management they will create a personalized menu for your group (will help speed things up if time is a concern).
My only wishes for the place would be table clothes for the outdoor area and a martini class for the bartenders. They really struggled with the martinis that we ordered -- gin and vodka as some were switched and there seemed to be no consensus in the size of martini glass. Some were served in 3oz glasses, while others were served in 6oz glasses.
All in all, one of the best places for a great steak and bottle of wine you'll find in all of China. I'm looking forward to another occasion to celebrate as I'm sure I'll choose this place. |

Go now – while the weather is beautiful and the evenings balmy – because there is no nice way to spend a warm, slow, sloshy evening than sitting on the outside terrace of Meat & Wine Co eating fabulous food and drinking great wine.
Meat & Wine Co has been explained as the least expensive food option in the Legation. Walking in through the main dining room downstairs, though, the décor suggests the same level of high end, high living restaurant in a very funky and hip atmosphere.
We chose to sit upstairs on the terrace, which came with a warning that it would be quite dark. In fact, it was atmospherically so, and sitting under an enormous tree with a bottle of superb red wine was really lovely, complete with a tiny bat that fled past, stunningly close to my nose.
And so, the food. The menu is South African, with much of produce imported from Australia. Not knowing much about SA cuisine, I can’t comment on its authenticity, but the entire meal was fresh, high quality, and really enjoyable. For starters, the grilled halloumi was perfect, with that nice squeak when you bite into it. The boerewors (one of their recommended dishes) is a dark, gamey sausage that was rich, lean, and full of flavor.
The main event is definitely their steak, and the tenderloin was done to perfection, with a rich peri-peri sauce. Options are mash, fries, or salad. For the sake of variety, we also ordered the grilled chicken breast in lemon, which was also beautiful (and an enormous serving), although the beef was certainly the highlight. For non-meat eaters, there are fish, seafood, and vegi options.
For desert, we shared a crème brulee, which was light, creamy, with a nice sharp crust to break through on the top – although we struggled to finish given the amount of food that came before.
The mid-week night we were there was very quiet, but the Meat & Wine Co comes highly recommended. With dinner for the pair of us (three courses, with wine) coming in at around RMB300-400 / head, it seemed very good value for money for a quality night out.
Note: It seems we’re no longer allowed to call it “The Legation”; it’s now “Ch’ien men 23”. Apparently using Wade-Giles to spell Chinese words isn’t a throwback to colonial adventurers in the same way that a reference to the old foreign concession is. I fear that it will continue to be known by its former English name for some time yet, although the new one may prove easier for taxi drivers to get a handle on.

The Meat & Wine Co. is part of an international group of steakhouses located throughout the world. This background gives them the cross-cultural wisdom to hone their offerings to a fine art, which they have definitely achieved at their Beijing location in Ch’ien Men 23. The overall uniqueness of this venue is highlighted by the subtle contrast between the surrounding historical grounds and the stylish glass building of the restaurant itself.
From start to finish we received impeccable service from the restaurant’s Assistant Managers, Richard and Dev. One of them was always present, working with the well-trained waitstaff to ensure the perfect amount of attention to each table. We sat outside which is truly a must whenever the Beijing weather allows!
The Meat & Wine Co. specializes in prime cuts of superior quality beef. They also offer a selection of seafood, poultry and vegetarian dishes that receive the same care and attention as their steaks. To perfectly accompany your meal, this restaurant boasts an impressive selection of wine creatively displayed in a unique wine tunnel made up of multi-layered sheets of colored glass.
Appetizer portions are large and can easily be shared. I unreservedly recommend the Carpaccio, thinly sliced seared beef served with slithers of pear, rocket leaves and a sesame soy dressing. The Vine-Ripened Tomatoes and Buffalo Mozzarella was served in an attractive, easy to share platter and was delicious down to the last bite. For our mains, we ordered the Fillet Steak (200 g) and the Grilled Chicken. Both were exceptionally tender and melted in our mouths. Steak this exceptional is truly a rare find in Beijing!
Due to a previous reviewer rhapsodizing about the Apple and Rhubarb Pie, I felt I must order it, even though my husband insisted that “we” were full. Our waitress brought us two forks, which led to our non-spoken duel of each of us ensuring that we both got our fair share. Coral was right; this dish is magnificent and truly incomparable. Be sure to save room for this when you go!
The Meat & Wine Company offers an impressive variety of steaks, ranging in price from 220 – 550 rmb. The quality of their dishes is reflected in their costs. If you prefer to sample before splurging on a big evening out, lunch set menus are available daily and include a starter, choice of two mains and seasonal fresh fruit for 148 rmb per person.
The concept behind the original Meat & Wine Co was to “provide a unique and exceptionally enjoyable steakhouse dining experience that caters for meat lovers in a sophisticated yet relaxed environment.” On this, and on all points above, The Meat & Wine Co. unquestionably receives full marks. My only amendment to this comment is that non-steak eaters are also well-considered. This restaurant has seemed to unlock the secret of being a true specialist, while also providing a variety of good quality options, at a range of prices. I will definitely be back, and I will be encouraging others to visit as well!
