Having worked out at Bally-CSI, Wills, Nirvana, and this gym, hands down this is the best gym in Beijing. This place has lots of cardio machines, a (somewhat small) free weights area, and the full range of machines, which are brand new and kept in great shape. It also includes a boxing area and a half court (its probably more like a fourth) basketball court thats great for small games and shooting some hoops in the middle of Beijing's long, cold winter.
The gym is kept spotless and it seems the equipment is cleaned multiple times each day and a workout towel is given to encourage people to clean their own equipment.
The locker room facilities are also very nice, this place has the best showers in Beijing, with shower heads the size of dinner plates as well as a nice sauna area.
The only bad thing I can say about this spot is that it doesn't have a pool. |

I have been working out at California fitness for a few years now, and up to this year, this was the best gym in Beijing. Recently they've been turning off the air conditioner in the main weight room area. I don't usually use hyperbole but temperature wise its equivalent to sitting in a stalled black car with the windows tightly rolled up in July, on vinyl seat covers while wearing that gimp outfit from the basement scene in Pulp Fiction with the heater on at 1pm in the Gobi desert.
I went in there today, and the only breeze i felt was the afterdraft from a waddling, shirtless fat guy with a 1 pack gut. Oh my Buddha! If you want to show off your junk, please do so in the privacy of your own home or bathhouse or whatever it is that you find appropriate where women aren't around...or anyone not legally blind.
California Beijing gym was initially chirstened with the Yao Ming name attached to it. Recently, I noticed that Yao Ming removed his name associated with the gym, and I wondered, why?
Now I know.

This is the best gym in Beijing. The caveat is that I don't need a swimming pool or a fancy sauna or a whirlpool jaccuzi with a waterfall (which the Taipei CA fitness has)...I just need a reliable joint to get my work out on. The trainers are all Chinese and their English is pretty poor, but if you can shuo alittle hua, you probably can pick up a trainer if you want. The place had 20-30 treadmills, 20-30 elliptical-style machines, 15-odd recumbant bikes and 15-odd regular bikes. There is a separate spinning, aerobics and yoga/pilates room and many of the classes are bilingual. The nautilus and free weights section are well-stocked. This is a very male-heavy gym and the PYLadies don't come out until in the evening and they seem to be goofing around on the machines rather than getting a work out. I don't know why, but the local guys at the gym love to preen and pose in front of the mirror, which I find alittle ridiculous, but believe it or not, there are some pretty buff Chinese dudes. You can find a free week-long pass to try it out, but I'm pretty sure you'll come to the same conclusion I did--Its the best gym in the city. |

For the last couple weeks I've been looking for a nice western-style gym near my home (@ Dongzhimen). I checked out Ozone Fitness and Nirvana Fitness before coming to California Fitness. I've written reviews on the others as well, so I won't say much about them here. Suffice it to say, I decided to join California Fitness.
The gym has an incredible number and variety of cardio machines -- I can't imagine them all being used at once! It also has a nice section of free weights with pretty much anything you could want. There is also two semi-separated sections of cable-based weight machines that covers the full gamut of muscle-groups and then some.
They also have a small 1/2 basket ball court, spinning room, aerobics room, boxing ring, and stretching room. They offer a bunch of classes (for free) and of course personal training (for a cost). Overall, the gym is kept at a nice temperature, is well lit and has lots of windows and mirrors.
The locker room is very clean, spacious, and has lots of benches. You can get one big towel and one small workout towel when you check in. There are nice showers, a steam room, and sauna. There is also a lounge with couches and four computers for surfing the internet.
This gym is without a doubt the best gym in Beijing. So why only 4.5 stars? Some minor critiques/suggestions: add a dedicated decline bench press and put more fans in the cardio room. Also, just FYI, they do not have a pool. |
