I had read about this cafe a long time ago but never had the chance to go and visit. Today was the day! Three of us arrived about midday to a quiet cafe, with the most welcoming and accommodating staff. With such a nice day, we wanted to sit outside, no problem, a table and three chairs materialised. Ordering was easy at the register inside and a limited number of food and drink options made the process much easier!
With some excellently priced coffee, 19rmb for a latte, good sized, and made with skim milk without any problem at all, it's a great place. Most places you have to first explain skim milk, and then generally go without. We also had fruit chillers, made with ice, fresh fruit and milk. The owner noted which ones were fresh fruit and which ones were syrup.
The sandwiches (bacon and egg, ham and cheese, tuna and one other I can't remember) came out in good time and looked great. I didn't have one but both the others said they were fabulous.
It was great to sit and people watch around the Drum Tower, with the rickshaw drivers, the tourists, under the shade of the lovely tree outside. I'll be back very soon! |

Excuse Cafe is very cute, and the prices are good. They have three sizes of most coffees, and the large is the same price as most other places. For example, they offer a cappuccino at 19 RMB, with the large at 25 RMB. The single espresso is only 12 RMB. They have a very reasonable tea option as well, 20RMB for a slightly smoky green tea. They offer takeaway coffee, sandwiches and pastry, as well as postcards and hutong knickknacks. I enjoyed someone's left-behind New York Review of Books, and there were a number of New Yorker magazines there as well. I haven't tried the coffee, but other people's coffees looked very good. There are hot breakfast and sandwich options as well. There are arm chairs, as well as more upright seating, and they can put tables outside. If you sit by the window, you can watch the hustle and bustle of the Drum tower touts and tourists. Calm jazz was playing during our visit, and there is free internet. The staff were very pleasant, and had excellent English skills. The shop also sells postcards and hutong souvenirs. Recommended. |

We have been frustrated by the lack of Western breakfast choices near Houhai, where we live. On the weekend, we end up either going to Financial Street (spending a bundle) or end up back around the Sanlitun area (same boring stuff with bad service). Nanluoguxiang has cafes with breakfast-like choices but they all open for operation after 10:30. One of my favorite cafes, NLGX, doesn’t open until 11:00!
Last weekend I wandered around a bit and found this great little café. They have their own coffee label (Excuse) and open doors at 7:30 am! Yeay!!! With wireless and “early bird specials” I now have a place that I can kick back and read the paper or surf foreign news whilst enjoying my eggs sunny side up with toast and jam on the side. Hurray for Western breakfast!
