I've been going regularly to Powerhouse since last July or so. Now that summer is coming back, I'm reminded of the major annoying feature I had forgotten about - the absolutely terrible terrible level of air conditioning. In the gym room itself, it is ok, but it is the change rooms where it is practically non-existent. Why can't they fix this, or at least put fans in there to help ease the red faces. I've started to leave a note in the Suggestion Box every day, but all I can think of is Homer's attempt to get 'no more apples' in the vending machine.

While it is much smaller than the old location, it suits my purposes well by being reasonably priced, close to home and work, but most importantly it opens at 7am. Mornings are definitely the best time to go - hardly anyone there.

I enjoy Powerhouse. Given its price (2009 RMB for a year) you really can't ask for more.

The gym area is kept very clean, its well air conditioned and though it seems small you never really need to wait for a cardio machine. There are a good selection of classes including hot yoga (but why oh why do they put this right next to the spinning class and at the same time periods? is there any ever forethought?), a decent outdoor basketball court (with the basket on the wrong side) and a nice tennis court on a elevated patio. You can get a swimming membership for an extra 1k RMB. The staff are generally friendly and eager to help.

One thing gets my goat about this place, though. I often see the sales people sitting down for consultations with prospective members and they are always quoting them ridiculous prices (4,5,6k) I understand that its perfectly acceptable here to try to screw over anyone who doesn't know better , but this is an international chain and should live up to those standards. For all who want to know - the bottom line price for this year is 2009 RMB (get it?!) for 12 months. Even then, you might be able to weasel 3-6 months extra on top. So just keep bargaining until you get them down to something reasonable.

Oh - one other complaint. The men's bathroom stinks.

I am still technically a member of this gym although I haven’t gone since they relocated to the current locale. The last location was much nicer. It was large enough to accommodate the after work masses and had enough equipment so one almost never had to wait for a machine. There were always highly attended spinning, dancing, and yoga classes. There was even a ping pong table.

The new location is a tiny corner sized version of its former self. The amount of machines now has been halved and of course the wait for each has been doubled. Very few classes are offered. There isn’t enough room for the spinning equipment so they cut it. The bathrooms would be comical if only someone else were forced to use them instead of me. As a consolation, management tacked on an extra 6 months to my membership in trade for not only moving the gym without notice and staying closed for several months while renovation was completed, but also jamming us all into a facility that most of us would have never signed up for in the first place.

“Powerhouse” gym is anything but. It may be an international name but their businesses practices are purely local.

I joined in September '07 but have only been going regularly since November. The gym is large, with a good range of cardio machines (Technogym treadmills, bikes, ellipticals, and stair-steppers, along with a few Nordictrack incline trainers) and a full array of weights of various kinds. In the early morning it's deserted, and even during the evenings it's manageable.

The locker room is a bit disappointing, as is the sauna (the walls don't reach all the way to the floor, so there's an annoying breeze of cool air coming in) and the steam room has not been working since I joined. No towels, but that's par for the course here, it seems.

Powerhouse gym has modern equipment and most of the amenities that other gyms have in town. It is a western style no-frills gym with exercise machines, treadmills, and dumbbells all in good shape. They offer spinning and other classes as well. Locker rooms and showering areas are not as nice as other gyms I have been to but they are kept very clean. The crowds are not too bad as long as you go on off times. My friend tells me it’s deserted in the morning but I’m not motivated enough to exercise before work so I deal with the crowds in the evening.

The music is not that great but I listen to my ipod so it doesn’t bother me much. Movies are played on a loop on the overhead TV sets.

Membership fees vary depending on how much they can get. I got my membership for 2,000 RMB for 14 months. My friend got the same membership for 4,000 RMB.

Recommended.
