It may not be fancy or be 1000 years old but the night food market is a must see and try. Its infamy comes from the purveyance of exotic bbq'd animals like scorpion, donkey, snake, dog and, er, sheeps penis.
At first glance it can seem a bit rough and ready with fresh meat sitting out on display- I would not fault a western tourist for initially being concerned about hygiene. But as with the Singapore hawker stalls its not good for business when visitors get sick interacting with a city landmark.I walked by in the day time and there wasnt a leftover foodscrap to be seen.
I recommend doing a walk along at least 3/4 of the strip first, while there is the usual mass repetition of products there are some variations worth tracking down- stay away from the pot stickers and anything else presented in pastry dough-its caked in oil and tasteless.
Anything on a stick is fair game but its worth asking them to cook it in front of you as some of the cooked food is used as bait and isn't fresh. Finally there are fixed prices on the signs above each stand, so no need to haggle. and if you do want to get outside your comfort zone try snake, it tastes like chicken.. |

Things here have gotten better in the lead up to the Olympics. Cleanliness, which has improved over the past three or four years, got even better, and signs with prices started going up so foreigers would finally pay the same price as Chinese.
If you are hosting a foreign tourist, take them here for the obligatory pictures of sea horses and scorpions and other assorted bugs on a stick, perhaps challenge them to try a few, but that's about it. Or if you have a visitor who is only coming to Beijing and no other cities and does not have a lot of time, you can sample every region's special snacks here, but other than that, its probably best for a photo or two and then heading to a real restaurant, especially considering how expensive a lot of the items are here, compared to other spots around the city. |

I never expected to be served good food here. But after my last visit, there was even more disappointment. The stand owners are pushy like those in the silk market. I ordered 2 squid sticks at the end of the south side of food street and didn't expect they would be cooked in deep oil. Normally they're fried on a BBQ esque hot plate and turned over in oil until they are crisp. They were bland and not at all crunchy like I expected nor was it fresh. I was sure they had soaked the squid in water for a long time enhancing their size! It just tasted awful and there were no free tissues at hand( they seem not to care about the long-term strategy because they assume their customers are one time buyers) I would never go back to this food stand again!
