Chaterhouse is the only book store in the Jing that has a reasonable selection of foreign magazines and books. Perhaps us folks just don't like to read too much nowadays or maybe its just the internet thing/sustainability/ADD/shelf space etc..it seems the only print titles available for purchase here are always Time/Newsweek/Economist/Business Week- which is nice but they can be a dry read at times, and also a bit depressing at the moment. Chaterhouse however manages to get in a variable range of US magazines like sports illustrated, entertainment weekly, vanity fair etc and also the occasional supermarket tabloid. some copies are months out of date check each one for timeliness. You can also choose from a long list of magazines and they will order for you each week/month and call you when its arrived.
They also have a sparkling range of business tomes, including a good selection focusing on business strategies in China (be sure to pick up a copy of 'One Billion Customers' by James MacGregor if you visit). Another highlight is the mandarin, china travel and city guides along with the same range for many foreign destinations.
Finally, once you have tracked down the basement location at The Place(not far from Song) dont forget to go order up some fantastic Singapore style grilled pork from Bee Cheng Hiang across the way.

| I am definitely a big fan of this store. Since I live closer to Jinsong, going to Wangfujing seems like an effort (not that bad, but it's definitely a trip). So going to Dongdaqiao is a really easy bus ride. So I give it points for convenience. I also give it points for location, as The Place is a nice area to be in. There's plenty to do and eat, so variety as well. I was turned on to the bookstore by a friend, and am glad he did. They have a great selection of books (both modern and classics) and the set-up is almost like something out of a Western bookstore. It's separated by category, than by author. Though last time I was there, I found books by Mary Higgins Clark in two different places. They also have a good selection of magazines (in English, Italian, French and German). It's a comfortable store as well, and the staff are friendly. The only problem I have with the store are the prices. They are higher than at the Foreign Language Bookstore, though are comparable with prices in the US. But I'll keep going, just for the wide selection. |

I am a big fan of this bookstore, especially after a few years of picking through the old and, what feel like, grimy books at the Foreign Language bookstore in Wangfujing.
Chaterhouse has got a small but good selection of modern language fiction titles, a good classics section, decent cookbooks, magazines, maps, general interest books, and an extensive kids books section. All in English.
The number of books here is not exactly huge, but the quality is definitely there. It's also refreshing to either be able to find what you are looking for or simply know that it is not there (the store is organized very well and the staff are helpful). It is also a good place to sneak a read if you have to kill time at The Place, located in a corner of its basement with big comfy chairs, it definitely feels secluded.
One downside is that these books don't come cheap. (Realistically, they are about the same as they would cost in north america, seeing the price tag in RMB just makes them look expensive.)
