Definitely the culinary highlight of the golden week for me. I had the chicken curry with lemongrass and chili and it was absolutely magnificent. The after taste lingered for hours and I felt compelled to return later in the week. This time I had the spring rolls and the mint/ meat salad, both very well prepared.
(Thai food is pretty common and uncomplicated and so I tend to find it hard to distinguish good from great sometimes)
The interior has a nice understated look that isn't trying to hard to impress but isn't shabby either. kind of just right for the food and ambiance. Service was OK and the prices represent a great deal for a quality experience like this. Also, is Serve the People not one of the greatest names for a restaurant in Beijing? It has a classic egalitarian theme that meshes cleanly with the Beijing style and most significantly, the modus operandi of a restaurant. Mind, in L.A. this name would be more closely associated with a downtown soup kitchen |

Hello all,
This is my first review on my first day at Localnoodles. My colleagues took me to this restaurant when I asked them if Beijing had any good Thai food nearby (I work in DongZhiMen).
Well, the reviews here are mostly spot-on. I highly suspect that our waitress was the very same quasi-suicidal zombie fuwuyuan by whom phoenix t. had the displeasure of being "served." Our water came late, our plates were different (...), and an entire dish was forgotten to be served, although she had written it down.
That being said, I am not a particularly picky food critic: I expect food to be hot, fresh, and make me feel better. Well, two out of those three are fairly objective criteria, and in this respect, Serve the People shines.
We ordered a lime-infused pad thai dish, green curry with chicken, and an assortment of vegetables (which included asparagus to my delight). All three dishes were late but great. The rice was 3.5 star-ish, jasmine rice - esque. Passable especially to this hungry, non-breakfast-eating fellow.
4 stars for taste - a very forgiving .5 stars for "service." |

The best way to describe this would be a chinese styled thai restaurant. While the portions are good for the price, the taste leaves a lot to be desired especially if you know what is like good thai food. Many westerners cant figure out the real difference and the chinese restaurants like this take them for a ride. The location is good after couple of drinks at Sanlitun, and to fill up your belly with something like a curry and rice. But now you have more better options.

| blah. I had such very average chinese-style thai food here. We started of with spring rolls, which were not made with thin spring roll wrappers, but bubbly egg-roll like wrappers. The innard were bland and rather unremarkable. I ordered the thai style stewed chicken with featured lots of veggies (good) and lots of fresh sichuan peppercorns (what the hell?). It tasted gross. My husband had the red curry, which was the markedly better choice. It had green and red peppers and basil leaves--great for people that want alot of meat in their dish. Both mains cost about 40 RMB. The service was responsive, but the lady who took our order looked like she'd rather gouge her own eyes out with a plastic spoon than wait on us. I guess I'm spoiled by thai food in thai land, but you'd figure finding authentic grub wouldn't be so difficult here in Beijing? |

Not sure why nationalist crazies like Rui Chenggang have yet to attack this place. The idea of a non-Hunan, non-Chinese restaurant named Serve the People just seems weird, a real waste of a great name.
But I digress...let's get to the important stuff, the food, you know this spot has to be doing something right as its stayed in business all these years. So what does it do? Their curries are fairly reasonable, mostly for around RMB40, and they do a good job on them. They also have a few really good salads and a decent soup or two that are pretty popular.
Service here is pretty good, a higher standard of English than you'll find at most other spots in the city, but that's befitting the Sanlitun location. The interior is nothing special, but comfortable.
This is a good spot for average thai food at average (for Beijing) thai food prices. |

I like Serve the People. Mostly the environment of the restaurant with a nice outdoor patio. I was going to give it 3 stars for the food but I'll bump it up by 1 for the nice outdoor setting in the summer. Perhaps 3.5 is more reasonable.
I'm a big fan of Thai food and spicy food in general. Beijing sucks for Thai food unfortunately. However, Serve the People is passable as Thai food in Beijing goes. The bright spots are the soups and the minced mint chicken salad (Larb Gai). The curries are too watery with the chicken seeming to have been deep fried first and not stewed in the curry as it should be.
Still, in a city that has a dearth of good Thai it's an acceptable choice, especially on a sunny day.

Been hearing and reading about this place for quite a long time.I think they won the That's Beijing 2007 Best Thai Award (not sure, could be wrong). Finally tried it out last Sunday. Can't say that I was that much impressed. The food was good but nothing so memorable. Service was ok but also nothing special. We were sitting outside so didn't have a very close look at the indoor decor. I somehow got the impression that it looked like a typical Chinese restaurant.
The place is not bad at all. I guess it's just when your expectations are higher, you tend to feel let down. It might not worth traveling across half a city, but could be a good option if you are in the neighborhood and not expecting to be wowed. The price is reasonable. Oh and they serve this bottled coke that I haven't seen in Beijing for years.

| Serve the People has a great ambiance that makes you feel like you could be in any sleek thai restaurant in New York City or San Francisco. Unfortunately, the food is overpriced and leaves much to be desired. We had the Green Thai Curry which was decent, shrimp spring rolls which were over-fried and under-seasoned, and a coconut seafood dish that was made up of creatures of the sea that I never knew existed - of which mushroom shaped fish balls were my favorite. The food is a little overpriced. The wait staff was very polite. The walls were adorned with nice fixtures, reminiscent of Pottery Barn back home. If you want to escape your normal Beijing fare of kong pao chicken and rude waiters, this is a great place to spend a relaxing evening. However, if you are looking for excellent Thai cuisine, I would keep looking... I hear Purple Haze is good.. |

Let me cut to the case - this place is great. The food is great, the draft beer is cold, the service is responsive and it's not expensive.
I would recommend this place to anyone that has a taste for Thai food. |
