What are we after when we go to a hairdressing salon? Is it a good result or a fabulous hair experience? Lurking in my inbox on 1 Feb, I found an invitation to enjoy half price services at Eric's Hilton Hotel branch for the month of February. I remember thinking at the time about whether to risk it to save money. I also remember thinking - why were they trying to promote that particular salon? The other day, when I was spring cleaning my e-mail - I found the email and made an on-the-spot decision that change was good and in this case - cheaper.
Yesterday I gave it a whirl. I have to say, I was hesitant when I walked in - the salon was empty apart from 5 staff, and 1 customer having a trim. I also wasn't sure about my stylist - I was expecting a Frenchman but my stylist was Chinese (my biggest ever hair disaster was with a Chinese stylist many years ago). He assured me knew what he was doing and so I let him at my hair once the the colourist had done her thing.
I have to say the salon felt wierd; it felt more like the Dolphin Hotel than the Hilton hotel; it was stuffy; tortured guzheng pluckings coming from the lobby clashed with an incessant techno beat. The guy who I assume was the manager studiously avoided me and didn't even shout a friendly French "salut" despite there being only one other customer. Around half way through I regretted my decision and wished I had gone to Eric's Sanlitun. My torture was made worse as my stylist crticised me about the state of my split ends and why on earth did I use a hair iron to ruin my hair. But, afterwards, when I was shown my new hairdo, I thought well perhaps the end does justify the means. I sort of quite liked it. As to whether I'll come back - well the jury's out until my girlfriends see it. If they like it, then perhaps I will forego the pizazz of Eric's Sanlitun next time. |
