At Souk, the sum is greater than its parts. The patio here is a hidden gem. There's no view to speak of, nothing outside that is remarkable really except a hedge, reliable outdoor wifi and a good drink list. I think its just a combination of the surprising quite in a bit of a nutty strip and a lot of things done nicely in one place.
Inside the decor is warm, welcoming and consistent. A few low tables on "beds" remain at the back of the restaurant but the front room also has oversized wooden tables and chairs. It invites long, relaxed evenings of conversation and laughter.
The food didn't floor me, but it was all good enough. We had a wide selection for a group, but did tend to stay on the Greek/Middle Eastern end of the menu. I don't know why they have fajitas or "souk pizza" The chuan'r is kebab style, complete with veggies and in some ways begged for seasoning. The serving presentation was fun, with the skewers stuck in into a stand like someone has been throwing knives was impressive. The hummus was good but lacking the freshness of similar dishes served around town at Rumi and BittaPitta.
To find Souk, look for the big red "Fat Mother Sichuan Hot Pot" sign (best sign in Beijing!) and go to the end of the small alley.
